Training & Personal Development at Baker McKenzie

8.4
8.4 rating for Training, based on 15 reviews
Please describe the training programmes at your company and tell us what skills you've picked up.
Informal training is excellent - the small team size means that you are constantly exposed to senior colleagues and learn from them. Formal training is good That said, we have very regular training sessions, as well as multi-day training programs interstate and overseas (with our practice groups and with lawyers of a similar experience level).

Formal training (E.g. internal professional development sessions) are good for keeping up to date with legal developments and practical tips on specific areas of law; other formal training (E.g.. drafting workshops with external providers) have been less helpful. Would appreciate more skills-based workshops E.g.. deconstructing an advice - this happens sporadically in practice groups and would be useful to have as part of general cohort training.

Training opportunities at the Firm are great. Almost every week there are team- or area-specific training sessions at lunch which can be freely joined. There are also regional or international training sessions, which can sometimes be hosted at difficult times (i.e. relative to Australia's time zone), but which are a great opportunity to be exposed to more international aspects of commercial law in practice. A lot of training obviously happens on-the-job, and Baker McKenzie's partners are terrific at this. As noted earlier in this survey, one of the great things about Baker McKenzie is the close and generally unfettered access to partners. This allows for terrific mentoring and learning opportunities - sometimes, I think that my career and skillset has accelerated much more quickly relative to some of my colleagues at other or larger law firms.

We had a 3 day Graduate induction and gradual integration into the Firm. After that, we have had continual catch-ups with our HR/TM representative. We are encouraged to attend professional development sessions on substantive areas of law and other areas of interest.

Multiple practice group (E.g.. corporate), topical (E.g.. M&A) and firm wide training sessions - open to employees of all levels.

Lots on offer. Flexible enrollment and cancellation policies. -. Enjoy the business management ones - E.g.., assertiveness, culture, management and wellbeing. Also enjoy the team specific professional development sessions for other industry groups - E.g.., IPTech and Tax.

Each week, there are numerous training sessions being run, which you can attend during or after (via recording). This makes learning and skills development excellent. Also, the induction process is fantastic, and really lets you enter your team with a level of competence that you wouldn't get from many other firms.
