The Story of Universal Music Australia

UMA is a part of Universal Music Group (UMG), one of the world’s largest companies in music-based entertainment. In its principal activity, recorded music, UMG is ranked number one with a 32% market share and many top global artists signed to its labels.

Founded in 1934, today UMA operates local record companies and has distribution deals with various independent Australian labels. Universal Music’s labels in Australia include EMI, Island, Dew Process, Casablanca, Virgin, and Lost Highway.

UMA is also represented by the following companies: Forbes Street Studios (recording studio), Bravado (merchandise company), Bring (music creator for brands and marketing), Sound of Vinyl (online vinyl store), and Universal Music Publishing Group (music publisher).

Culture & vibe

UMA is a great place to work if you are looking to combine your passion for music with your career goals. The company has a collection of the best labels and employee resources that can be a great way to gain insights into the music industry.

Depending on the team you are in, you may work on some of the amazing releases and biggest artists. To support these artists, the management encourages people to attend some amazing concerts with their colleagues. This builds good friendships and makes the teams stronger.

Also, most of the co-workers are passionate and genuinely interested in what they are doing. People are creative and communicative. They have a fast-paced, productive and fun environment to work in. However, some insiders reported that the team is constantly reduced and not enough staff for the amount of work, leaving some employees overloaded with work.

Recruitment process

The Career page of UMA’s site provides two links: to join their Talent Pool and to the current roles they are looking to fill. The first will take you to the form you need to fill out to let them know which area of business you're interested in, and to get notified about the new relevant jobs.

The second link will take you to the main corporate website where you can explore the jobs based on territories. You can also find the job posting on UMA’s social media. Some of the positions currently open are Artist Development Coordinator (entry-level), Client Services Coordinator (entry-level), and Streaming Partnerships Executive (mid-senior level).

The general requirements may include graduating with a degree in arts, media and communications, digital production, or relevant area, a basic understanding of production music and music copyright, experience or interest in music marketing and promotion, digital music technology, and audio production.

Other than full-time jobs, Universal Music also offers temporary staffing opportunities and internship programs (remote/on-site) to provide immersive educational experiences across its business units and labels. These can foster professional and personal growth while also bringing added value to the company.

To support the development of individuals, UMA offers learning solutions, career advancement, and global opportunities. However, there may not be enough chances for promotion.
