The Story of IPART Australia

IPART (Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal) of NSW was founded in 1992. IPART helps the residents of NSW get reliable and safe services at a fair price. They serve as the independent pricing regulator for water, energy, public transport and local government; the licence administrator of water, electricity and gas; and the scheme administrator and regulator of the Energy Savings Scheme.

It also performs a number of other roles at the NSW Government’s request and undertakes reviews and investigations into a wide range of economic and policy issues. IPART consists of the Tribunal (responsible for making decisions and recommendations) and the Secretariat (teams of analytical, legal, and administrative staff who assist the Tribunal).

Although IPART is an NSW government agency, it makes decisions independently of the government. When making recommendations and decisions, it focuses on protecting consumers from unreasonable price increases, improving providers’ efficiency and service quality, encouraging competition, protecting the environment, and ensuring that regulated service providers remain financially viable.
