Pros & Cons

  • The people are quite good here, as is the work life balance.
  • The people and the industry. The office is full of people I enjoy working with and the industry itself is one based on relationships, and therefore have plenty of opportunities to socialise and network with insurers, underwriters, etc. In the graduate program, there is a strong focus on our learning and development, meaning we have been offered plenty of opportunities to gain experiences through client interaction and mentoring.
  • Culture and people
  • The opportunity to be mentored by industry leaders.
  • Good people
  • The lack of structural organisation, and leadership is disappointing. As is the company's approach to remuneration of employees.
  • Our office has experienced a high amount of change recently, especially in staff turnover. This is mainly due to the lack of experience insurance people in the industry and therefore people often move around. Not so much a Gallagher issue in itself, but we have lost/about to lose some really good and talented employees that we have just started to build working relationship with.
  • Specific to the grad program, being placed in a team that is not prepared to accommodate a graduate.
  • The loss/ reduction of forum's and social events

At Gallagher I have heard good things about the ability to progress your career internally, not that we've had the opportunity to experience this yet.

Corporate Social Responsibility
Last year was very good, seems a little reduced this year. Time will tell.

Culture
Our office culture for the most part is great. Have had no issues in asking for help and everyone has been willing to take time out of their day to assist when needed. After hours, we have had social experiences such as after work drinks or events, which has been a great opportunity to get to know everyone better.

I'm unsure of any specifics but it seems the work culture is very inclusive which is good.

This obviously depends on the team we are in. Some teams, such as workplace risk, don't have the workload or type of work to sustain a full-time graduate role and therefore some days a left with not too much to do. In saying this, though, WPR has offered the opportunity for lots of client interactions and site visits which have been very valuable. In other teams such as Corporate and Fin Lines, they have still offered these experiences (albeit not to the same volume) but they have also offered opportunities to develop our traditional broking skills and stakeholder relationship management, which will be more valuable in the role we have next year.

Very nice office, open plan and bright with large windows overlooking the city. Dress code isn't too bad either but could use a looser Summer uniform.

Recruitment
Can't remember all of it but remember doing an interview with an interviewer and then a second interview with another interviewer then a phone call couple weeks later offering the role. Personal questions about myself, my background like my degree and past employment. Then questions about what understanding of insurance brokers and their place in the market as well as why I was interested in Gallagher grad program. Just be yourself and answer questions open and honesty and do some research on the company and the industry they operate in.

Salary
Pay for the grad program was slightly higher than I was expecting for a graduate opportunity, but too early to tell moving forward. As for bonuses, we haven't been exposed to this yet, but it seems like there are good incentives for the brokers that have a book/accounts. Personally, has been free lunches/drinks but more senior people have other opportunities like free tickets, etc.

I've learnt more about insurance than I thought there was to learn. The training sessions are always informative and you're constantly learning.
