Culture at Northrop Consulting Engineers

9.0
9.0 rating for Culture, based on 32 reviews
Please describe your company's culture both in the office and after hours. Let us know about the structure and hierarchy, cooperation and teamwork, and socialising amongst colleagues.
The company culture is very good, like we would have the New of the Week in each week and every discipline would share the goals and learns during that week. And after hours they would have a happy hour on each Friday to relax and this bonds the relationship between colleagues.

Everyone is very welcomed. All employees are highly respected in office and out of office. Northrop Consulting Engineers has a very good culture of socialisation and everyone is encouraged to support each other and there is a good cooperation among all employees. A weekly workload meeting held to meet sure everyone is on track and distribute workload among teammates. Social and team bonding events are organised on regular basis. End of the week distress hours is for employees to have drinks and catch up with other colleagues in the office in an informal setting. There are many, the above are just a few to name.

It's actually amazing. The company is employee-owned meaning that some managers and executives are principles who own private shares in the company. All profits are returned to them, which can then be passed on to staff. The culture is tight, the managing partners (CEOs) work in the same office and everyone is approachable.

The culture here is very good. Teamwork and cooperation is always encouraged here. There is always social/learning events and lunchtime talks run which breaks up the day. Socialising after hours is also encouraged.

It's easy to find people to ask questions and people are always willing to help. Everyone has been friendly and welcoming so far.

It's very well-structured with the mentors-mentees system, but the best thing in my opinion is that it's not strictly working with your team. I can work with someone who's on the other teams, giving me the opportunity to socialize with others. It's something that's very helpful and help me learn as I'm not very good at opening up talks with new people.

In the office all levels of heireachy are friendly and approachable. Still maintain a clear distinction of authority and expectations. A good culture of team work and socialising throughout the day is ecnouraged. Work puts on regular events to encourage social engagement outside of work hours.

There is significant emphasis on creating a good culture here at Northrop. Senior support is readily available to assist with the work. There are several social events every year and smaller social events can be organized by anybody who wants to!

The company structure goes from Directors, Principals, Associates, Senior Engineers, Engineers and then Graduates. However, everyone sits together and so I interact and get supported by everyone regardless of hierarchy. Everyone is at ease to talk to everyone and there is friendly banter around the office daily. There is constant discussion and communication over projects and design decisions and everyone respects each other immensely. Everyone is friendly and happy to answer any questions and they understand that, as a grad, I am still learning and it takes time for tricky concepts to sink in. During work hours everyone is very social, going out to lunch frequently and organising bonding afternoons twice a year. Outside work hours there are many events that the office attend together such as Christmas parties, trivias and football games.

I have worked at engineering companies of all scales; a small firm of 10 employees, one of the largest engineering consultancies in the world and now Northrop (approx 450 employees). Northrop's size is perfect as you have the support of a big business and exposure to large projects, while it is small enough to know everyone in your office well - including the owners of the business! Therefore you feel like an important part of the team. This is encouraged with events in and out of the office to spend time with colleagues. In my first month at the company I ate more cake to celebrate staff birthdays than what is humanly possible!

At Northrop, you will work as part of a small team, however there are also a number of other social groups which are available for graduate engineers. There are also a number of office and discipline social events which add to the social culture at Northrop. The seating arrangement in the office is also open plan to encourage collaboration between colleagues

During work hours the company culture is super collaborative and everyone is keen to help graduates out. Northrop has lots of smaller offices across Australia, not just in the capital cities. This keeps teams small, which I love as it is very easy to seek help and assistance when needed. The office is all open plan too, so I work alongside managers and principal engineers. After hours, there is a pretty strong social calendar and opportunities to catch up with other offices. The all company conference is a highlight! All offices are flown in and stay over night!

Really good structure, and each new entry gets a 'mentor' who helps them in a technical and social sense. Everyone is super welcoming and friendly even though I am an undergraduate, and we go out and get coffee/lunch every day, and eat it together. There are also multiple socialising events outside of work.
Intern, Sydney - 08 Jul 2022
Hybrid working is highly encouraged with very flexible working arrangement. I would describe the hierarchy as a flat and horizontal one.
Graduate, Melbourne - 07 Jul 2022
The company culture is one of the great aspects of Northrop. The culture club is responsible for organizing events that bring people together, and this includes morning teas, lunches and after hours drinks - even conferences. This leads to a cooperative team where experience and knowledge is shared between engineers of all levels.
Intern, Brisbane - 07 Jul 2022
Everyone is happy to provide guidance and help where they can. It's easy to ask someone outside of your immediate team for assistance, without the thought of being unwanted. Whilst there is defined levels of heirarchy, it's not evident at a day to day scale. If you didn't make yourself personally aware of those who are higher up, then you wouldn't get the impression anyone is more valuable than another.

People are very friendly and they want you to learn. They throw you in the deep end but are there to coach you through the process of learning. They are good at exposing you to different areas to ensure you see a wide variety of projects. They understand that learning takes a while and ease comes with experience. Teamwork is very strong in the office and there is a good sense of belonging. It is a very social office - often going out for lunch together or other activities outside work such as football matches, trivias or dinners. There is good bantering during office hours amongst the hard work that is happening always.

Since COVID, staff have been slowly returning to the office and the culture is picking back up to what it once was. We have had multiple social get togethers over the past 6 months to encourage camaraderie between the employees. In the office the culture is derived from the high expectations we hold in our work, yet during break times and after hours everyone is happy to have a laugh and a relax.
Graduate, Sydney - 06 Jul 2022
Work culture is great. As a graduate I have found a "mentor". A more senior engineer that I do not work with who checks up on me periodically to ensure I am getting experience in a wide array of engineering applications. This system is referred to as the "Northrop Uni". The greater Northrop culture is very supportive and knowledgeable. Always keen to lend a hand or bounce ideas off of. Nothrop trys really hard to look after thier employees. Here in the Newcastle office, we have bacon and egg rolls cooked for us every Friday. There are also numerous team bonding opportunities and lunches to foster a positive work culture
Graduate, Charlestown - 06 Jul 2022
flat structure with minimal emphasis on hierarchy. Appears to be significant teamwork on different projects. Relatively frequent social events to create a good team culture
