Law generally has a very poor promotional structure. It takes 5 years for your first promotion.

There is a strong culture of internal growth at my firm. Many of those recently promoted to senior associate level started with the firm as summer clerks or junior lawyers.

Promotion is based on merit and social aspects. Most lawyers become senior associates after 4-6 years post-qualification experience. Progression to senior associate is possible at an earlier stage if one has extensive prior experience and is an exceptionally high-performing lawyer. To progress to senior associate, a lawyer needs to not only be technically very capable, but also demonstrate that they meet each of the firm's core requirements for senior lawyers (e.g. teamwork, approachability, mentoring of junior lawyers).
