Working Hours at CSIRO

How flexible is your company when it comes to hours?
I work currently full time. This is generally 8-4, or a similar variation to this (9-5). As a grad student, I was working two days a week, and this was manageable. However during the later periods when I was getting closer to handing in my thesis, I was given a much lesser workload so I could work on completing my thesis which I greatly appreciated. I would say CSIRO are very flexible with working hours and were like this prior to COVID. They encourage wellness of the employees, and I think this can be seen in their approach to WFH, flexibility, range of leave options, and cultural sensitivities when it comes to taking time off.

Full-time, 7.35 hours a day 5 days a week. There is a lot of flexibility when it comes to short-term (ie a few hours) leave, and the range of other forms of leave are pretty generous. I would like to move into a 4-day week model in the future.

Very flexible, which is something I like. A good work/life balance. As long as we turn up and do the required hours every week, there isn't a problem. No fixed lunch breaks either, which suits me, as sometimes I don't feel like a very long lunch break, and sometimes I feel like a longer one...!
Intern, Brisbane - 08 Jan 2022
Company is very flexible due to little oversight and focusing on completing the work rather than attending office for a certain amount of hours
Intern, Canberra - 23 Dec 2021
Start and finish times are flexible. Working from home is also flexible.
Intern, Melbourne - 20 Dec 2021
The company is very flexible, provided I am at work for the agreed amount of hours. I am able to arrive or leave early or late as I please.
Intern, Melbourne - 20 Dec 2021
The company is inflexible with hours, at least for students, and there is only a 1 week holiday from Christmas to new years
Intern, Sydney - 17 Dec 2021
I work 9-5, but so long as the work is done people here come and go as they please. very flexible.
Graduate, Hobart - 17 Dec 2021
Flexible Hours, Work from home options.
Intern, Melbourne - 17 Dec 2021
8:30 to 5:00 Monday to Friday with 70 minutes break spread over the day. The company is very flexible with when you take your break & how you split it up. Requests for time off needs to be submitted and approved but it is a relatively straightforward process.
Intern, Hobart - 17 Dec 2021
Very flexible predominately because we are working with code, online and independently there is no pressure to work any particular hours. about 8 a day including lunch all up.
Intern, Sydney - 17 Dec 2021
Flexible to some degree. You have signed a contract to work a set amount of hours, however showing up a few minutes late/ leaving a little early on the rare occasion is fine as we are all human and sometimes have good reasons to leave.
Intern, Hobart - 17 Dec 2021
CSIRO is very flexible with work hours. They want their staff to have a good work/life balance. I must complete a certain amount of hours each day, however it's up to me what time I start and finish work for the day and when I take my breaks. I also can choose to work from home or go into the office.
Intern, Geelong - 17 Dec 2021
They are very flexible you pretty much come in when you want and leave when you want as long as you abide by the hours specified in your contract. I start usually at 8:30 and leave at 4:30 but somedays I can also choose to come in a little later like 9:30 and then just stay till 5:30
Intern, Perth - 16 Dec 2021
I am currently doing full time work. I work 7.2 hours Monday to Friday but am only required to be onsite on Thursdays. The other days I woke from home which is great as it saves me from the commute during peak hour traffic
Intern, Perth - 16 Dec 2021
my specific team is flexible with working hours which is good
Intern, Brisbane - 16 Dec 2021
Normal days are 8:30-5pm, but hours are relatively flexible (I can come in early and leave early for example, so long as I'm working the same hours)
Intern, Brisbane - 16 Dec 2021
Most of the emphasis is on the work done, rather than the hours spent, so it is common for people to come in early or leave late. There is still an expectation that you be available for the main business hours, or provide notice if you are not available for whatever reason. As most of the workers are very passionate about the work they do, it is also common for people to come in early or stay after hours to get their work done. The organisation is also open to working from home, although depending on the job being worked on, it may not always be possible to be completed from home.
Intern, Melbourne - 10 Dec 2021
Very flexible - come in to do what we need to do
