Diversity at CSIRO

8.8
8.8 rating for Diversity, based on 40 reviews
Please provide further information on diversity with respect to women, ethnic minorities and LGBT. Please comment on issues such as recruitment, retention, promotion, child care, maternity leave, etc.
I didn't rank 10, because I feel like we can always do more in terms of diversity! I think CSIRO does a great job, but I am physically white and also come from a privileged background. Therefore, I feel like I can only really comment from my narrow perspective. In terms of retention and recruitment, CSIRO has a good track record of keeping employees including Indigenous employees. They have targeted identified recruitment, which increases diversity. There is childcare on site, and accessible maternity leave.
Graduate, Wollongong - 16 Nov 2023
There are employment targets for particular communities, there are regular celebrations of diversity events, and there were generous leave entitlements for diverse groups including Cultural Leave.
Graduate, Newcastle - 01 Nov 2023
Everyone seems to be very accepting and I haven't noted a situation where there would be an issue which is great!
Intern, Brisbane - 08 Jan 2022
I am not sure of specific policies but CSIRO have won awards for their performance in this category and it is often well regarded in this aspect.
Intern, Canberra - 23 Dec 2021
Great diversity in terms of culture, responsibility assignment. Can't comment on FTE contract.
Intern, Melbourne - 20 Dec 2021
There were several questions about diversity in the application process.
Intern, Melbourne - 20 Dec 2021
My supervisor from a diverse background is often involved in interviews outside of her field for diversity reasons. It's clear that CSIRO tries to be diverse though the lack of diverse senior researchers may indicate a problem.
Intern, Sydney - 17 Dec 2021
pride merch (lanyards and shirts) are sold on the company store and worn openly by staff. acknowledgements to country are made at the start of each major meeting. there is little room for intolerance here
Graduate, Hobart - 17 Dec 2021
They care about diversity and it is evident in the workplace & the way they talk about culture etc.
Intern, Hobart - 17 Dec 2021
My team is quite diverse. And there is a commitment to being respectful
Intern, Sydney - 17 Dec 2021
They seem to be consistently aiming for an even workplace diversity, with newsletters covering efforts to incorporate more females into specific areas of work.
Intern, Hobart - 17 Dec 2021
CSIRO have several diversity leaders who approached me and explained how they are there to help if I have any issues. CSIRO is an extremely diverse workplace with people from many different backgrounds. Some people also work part time as they have young children or other personal commitments.
Intern, Geelong - 17 Dec 2021
It is evident that this company is extremely committed to promoting diversity
Intern, Perth - 16 Dec 2021
While CSIRO is committed to more diversity, due to its poor hiring policies, the majority of the staff have been here for decades and as such reflect the diversity policies from those times. There is childcare available, and from my experience, women and people from ethnic minorities have generally been treated well.
Intern, Melbourne - 10 Dec 2021
Lots of focus on women in science, and neurodivergence.
Graduate, Canberra - 09 Dec 2021
There are more males than females at my workplace, maybe a 80/20 split
Intern, Sydney - 08 Dec 2021
LGBT, people of colour and women are all treated fairly here and there is good representation of most groups. I cannot comment on child care as I have no experience needed that kind of consideration.
Intern, Brisbane - 08 Dec 2021
The workplace is diverse and accepting of people
Intern, Bribane - 08 Dec 2021
There are multiple programs and events such as Women in STEM, Aboriginal flag and Torres Strait Islander flag presentation, LGBTIQ+ inclusion. CSIRO treats everyone equally for the issues stated.
Intern, Herston - 08 Dec 2021
There is a very diverse and international team of people here of both men and women
Intern, Newcastle - 08 Dec 2021
What does your company do to attract applicants from less privileged backgrounds?
I note that there is a good spread and diversity with the different universities that students are coming from. There is no bias towards one or several universities that might be seen as more prestigious .
Intern, Brisbane - 08 Jan 2022
I am unfamiliar with the processes in place to do this.
Intern, Canberra - 23 Dec 2021
Scholarship opportunities for Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander students are one example I'm aware of.
Intern, Melbourne - 20 Dec 2021
I can't really say, everyone is encouraged to apply for positions here and they will make accommodations and concessions for different applicants depending on their needs
Graduate, Hobart - 17 Dec 2021
Indigenous programs are in place.
Intern, Sydney - 17 Dec 2021
Broad advertising.
Intern, Hobart - 17 Dec 2021
CSIRO lets it be known that they want to hire people from all walks of life but the candidate needs to have the ability to do the job or be in a position to learn. They also pay you so you can move for the job if that's something you would consider.
Intern, Brisbane - 08 Dec 2021
As a company primary engaged in STEM activities, as a natural bi-product of government encouragement of diversifying this area, the workplace is naturally diverse and indiscriminate.
Intern, Bribane - 08 Dec 2021
Haven't payed any attention to these details
Intern, Herston - 08 Dec 2021
I do not know
Intern, Newcastle - 08 Dec 2021
CSIRO provide relocation assistance/expense payments. Interviews conducted via videocall so that it is fair for all candidates to attend.
Graduate, Townsville - 08 Dec 2021
I'm not sure - this hasn't been applicable in my situation.
Graduate, Canberra, ACT - 08 Dec 2021
The organisation has policies in trying to meet certain thresholds of diversity, including making sure 3% of employees are from indigenous backgrounds, and I believe there is now an attempt to introduce 50% male and female staff into the workplace. I presume the organisation also applies affirmative action, which is good.
Graduate, Sydney - 08 Dec 2021
Providing additional scholarships specific for applicants from less privileged backgrounds.
Intern, Brisbane - 07 Dec 2021
