Culture at CSIRO

9.0
9.0 rating for Culture, based on 44 reviews
Please describe your company's culture both in the office and after hours. Let us know about the structure and hierarchy, cooperation and teamwork, and socialising amongst colleagues.
From my experience as a work experience student, following through until now as a graduate student, there has been a strong consistency in workplace culture. I have been treated the same as those 'higher up' than me, and that has been the same throughout each team and group I have worked within. For me, the line managers and people in higher positions have treated their coworkers with dignity and respect, and this respect is reflected within the teams. I have observed individuals are confident in speaking up during team meetings about any issues or concerns, and those concerns have been addressed. During social events, it is clear the teams (that I have been a part of) are cohesive and not divided, and this makes it easier for the team to work together. I believe CSIRO has a highly positive workplace culture, and as someone who has worked within different governmental departments, I would say by far the most respectful, efficient and cohesive.

The work is team-based and I work remotely therefore have not much to do with the other local workers, but there are many social events through the year including diversity days, birthdays, anniversary celebrations for CSIRO, as well as a Social Club.

Culture at CSIRO is amazing and like nothing I've experienced before. Everyone is approachable and helpful to any questions asked, and very accepting. Our student team works very well together, and we support each other very well. The students socialise regularly outside of work (there was a get together every Friday afternoon).

The team leader is very nice, however most people including my supervisor work from home so I don't see people much and do not socialise with them much.
Intern, Canberra - 23 Dec 2021
Very good! Great atmosphere and an awesome environment to work in. My supervisor makes an effort to ensure a social yet hard working environment in the team.
Intern, Brisbane - 20 Dec 2021
The team structure seems relatively flat, where daily progress meetings require input from each member. Have enjoyed team lunches and social sport with colleagues.
Intern, Melbourne - 20 Dec 2021
Everyone is very friendly, and there is no noticeable hierarchy in the office. Everyone works together and socialises at lunch. I can't comment on outside work hours as I have been here for a very short time.
Intern, Melbourne - 20 Dec 2021
Academia in general involves a lot of politics. In CSIRO the Astronomy staff tend to dislike speaking with Data61 staff, there also doesn't seem to be much collaboration between separate Data61 teams. Within my team though we have a very collaborative environment, even very senior managers are quite friendly and open to discussion.
Intern, Sydney - 17 Dec 2021
the staff at the cafeteria learned my name in just two days and formed a very genuine rapport. My co-workers have cliques where they organize social events like bushwalking and rock climbing after work hours. there doesn't seem to be an explicate power hierarchy, everyone is treated like equals

The culture at the company is very good - very friendly, candid people.
Intern, Melbourne - 17 Dec 2021
Everyone is super open & happy to have a chat. It is a very friendly and welcoming culture both inside and outside of working hours. We will often go for morning tea together during the work day.
Intern, Hobart - 17 Dec 2021
Everyone is very friendly and approachable, plenty of opportunity to catch up and talk
Intern, Sydney - 17 Dec 2021
It is very inclusive and welcoming. We are invited to after-hours catch ups and to talk during lunch breaks.
Intern, Hobart - 17 Dec 2021
The culture at CSIRO is amazing. From day 1 I felt welcomed and supported. The office environment is great too. There is a social club and regular events for staff to get involved in.
Intern, Geelong - 17 Dec 2021
It's very inclusive, and very flexible
Intern, Perth - 16 Dec 2021
All my colleagues have been so friendly and welcoming. The women I work in the office with are extremely welcoming and the staff from the Academy who I have mostly met virtually have also been very friendly and welcoming
Intern, Perth - 16 Dec 2021
Strong emphasis on workers health and safety, both mentally and physically. Supervisors are responsive if you have any issues with the work you have been given, e.g. excessive workload. Most work is independent, but others generally willing to help out where able to. Regularly meet up with colleagues during lunch breaks to talk and play table tennis. Usually only contact during office hours, however some experiments require some level of input outside of office hours.
Intern, Melbourne - 10 Dec 2021
The culture here at CSIRO feels very plastic. There are always emails going around regarding events and inclusion of everyone, however, I have not experienced this culture working here full time yet. Meetings at CSIRO feel very empty and drag on. There is undoubtedly a strong teamwork culture, however, overall it feels like ultimately a lot of time passes here with not a lot getting done.
Intern, Newcastle - 08 Dec 2021
In the office there is strong team values, everyone is friendly. Different teams socialise together. in the office there is a managerial hierarchy but everyone is kind of friends anyway. Normally everyone cooperates and is grateful to be involved in other projects. sometimes colleagues socialise outside of work hours
Intern, Sydney - 08 Dec 2021
Everyone I have met likes the company
