Your role

ABC's in-house legal team offers its highly popular work experience placements once again in 2023. These unpaid placements, lasting for 5-6 weeks, are based in the ABC Legal offices in Ultimo, NSW, although other locations may be available.

For a work-experience student in ABC Legal, a friendly and supportive learning environment awaits. The vibrant, dynamic, and cohesive team acts as mentors, eager to answer questions and provide valuable insights into a potential career in media law.

The precise dates of the placement terms are yet to be finalised, however, the placements run from February until early December 2024.

Training & development

Many people come to ABC with qualifications in journalism, radio, online, or a relevant course suited to a corporate area. However, there are courses available to keep you up to date with skills or systems unique to the ABC or to keep your industry knowledge relevant.

Their training courses include:

  • Digital skills development;
  • Production skills;
  • Camera skills;
  • Editing skills and associated technology;
  • Desktop Editing for Journalists;
  • Writing for Radio/ Writing for News/ Writing for Television;
  • ABC Editorial Policies;
  • Legal workshops;
  • Core systems including; SAP HR, Finance, Records management, Rights Management, training in IT systems, iNews, and NETIA;
  • A range of OH&S training includes; fatigue management, personal risk assessment, induction, manual handling, first aid, and radiological awareness training.

About you

To be eligible for the placement, you must:

  • Be in your final year of your law degree at an Australian university; and be required to complete a supervised practical legal placement as part of your university degree or as part of your practical legal training to qualify for legal admission.
  • Have a demonstrated interest in media, technology, and/or legal innovation/operations.

Candidates who do not meet these minimum requirements will not be considered for a placement.
